Paver Patio Installation in Dallas: Concrete vs Brick vs Natural Stone Comparison

Your patio is the foundation of your outdoor living space. It’s where you grill, where the kids play, and where you unwind after a long Texas day. But with Dallas’s notorious clay soil, extreme temperature swings, and heavy spring rains, choosing the right paver material isn’t just about looks — it’s about longevity.

At Groundhogs Services, we’ve installed thousands of square feet of patios across Mesquite, Dallas, Garland, and the surrounding DFW area. Here’s our honest comparison of the three main paver options.

The Contenders

Concrete Pavers

Concrete pavers are the most popular choice in DFW — and for good reason. They’re affordable, consistent in color and size, and engineered for strength.

Pros: $4-$8 per square foot installed, consistent color, high compressive strength (8,000+ psi), wide variety of shapes and colors, easy to replace individual pavers

Cons: Can fade in Texas sun, color may not be as rich as natural stone, surface can spall if low-quality mix is used

Best for: Budget-conscious homeowners, large patios, modern and contemporary designs

Brick Pavers

Clay brick pavers offer timeless appeal and exceptional durability. They’re fired at high temperatures, making them incredibly hard and colorfast.

Pros: $6-$12 per square foot installed, rich color that never fades, extremely durable, classic look that complements traditional DFW architecture, slip-resistant surface

Cons: Limited color options (red, brown, charcoal), more expensive than concrete, can develop efflorescence (white mineral deposits), slightly more difficult to cut

Best for: Traditional and colonial-style homes, historic districts, homeowners who want color that lasts decades

Natural Stone Pavers

Flagstone, travertine, bluestone, and limestone offer unmatched beauty and uniqueness. No two stones are alike.

Pros: $10-$20 per square foot installed, unique natural appearance, high-end look, excellent heat reflection (travertine stays cool), increases property value

Cons: Expensive, color variation can be unpredictable, some stones (limestone) are softer and can scratch, requires more careful installation/”>installation

Best for: Custom homes, pool decks, high-end entertaining spaces, homeowners prioritizing aesthetics

Base Preparation: The Secret to a Patio That Lasts

DFW’s clay soil expands when wet and contracts when dry. This movement can destroy a patio that isn’t properly prepared. Here’s what proper base prep looks like:

  1. **Excavation** — Remove 7-9 inches of soil. For clay soil, we go deeper — 10-12 inches.
  2. **Geotextile fabric** — A woven fabric that separates the base from the clay, preventing soil migration.
  3. **Base material** — 6-8 inches of crushed limestone or granite (Class 2 or 3 base). Compacted in 4-inch lifts with a plate compactor.
  4. **Leveling sand** — 1 inch of concrete sand, screeded to the exact grade.
  5. **Edge restraints** — PVC or aluminum edging to prevent lateral movement.

DFW warning: Skip the geotextile fabric or skimp on base depth, and your patio will settle, crack, or heave within 2-3 years. We’ve seen it happen hundreds of times.

Sealing: Yes or No?

Sealing is optional but recommended in DFW for two reasons:

  • **Stain protection** — BBQ grease, red wine, and Texas mud are easier to clean from sealed pavers.
  • **Color enhancement** — Sealing brings out the natural color of concrete and brick pavers.

What to use: A water-based, breathable sealer. Avoid solvent-based sealers that trap moisture and cause efflorescence. Reapply every 2-3 years.

What NOT to seal: Natural limestone and some sandstone — they need to breathe. Sealing them can trap moisture and cause spalling during freeze-thaw cycles.

DFW Freeze-Thaw Considerations

Dallas averages 20-30 freeze-thaw cycles per year. Water seeps into paver joints, freezes, expands, and can lift or crack pavers.

Proper installation prevents this:

  • Use polymeric sand for joints (it hardens and resists water penetration)
  • Ensure 1/4″ per foot slope for drainage
  • Install a proper edge restraint system
  • Use pavers rated for freeze-thaw (all three materials above qualify)

Cost Breakdown by Patio Size

| Patio Size | Concrete Pavers | Brick Pavers | Natural Stone |

|—|—|—|—|

| 200 sq ft (small) | $800-$1,600 | $1,200-$2,400 | $2,000-$4,000 |

| 400 sq ft (medium) | $1,600-$3,200 | $2,400-$4,800 | $4,000-$8,000 |

| 600 sq ft (large) | $2,400-$4,800 | $3,600-$7,200 | $6,000-$12,000 |

| 1,000 sq ft (entertaining) | $4,000-$8,000 | $6,000-$12,000 | $10,000-$20,000 |

Our Recommendation

For most DFW homeowners, concrete pavers offer the best balance of cost, durability, and aesthetics. If your home has traditional architecture and you want color that never fades, brick pavers are worth the premium. For pool decks and high-end entertaining spaces where appearance matters most, natural stone delivers unmatched beauty.
